The Steampunk World

Being the continued explorations of a living steampunk.

The steampunk world is all around us, lying just out of sight, in a continuous thread of steampunk builders and culture that extends from the Victorian era to the present. You'll find no science fiction here: This is real life steampunk.

The grasscutter is basically a huge, herbivore rat. Whereas the rat lives in holes and will eat most anything, grasscutters love grass and only grass. They look like nutria or capybara but without the webbed feet. A Google image search for 'grasscutter' or 'cane rat' will turn up some pictures, but none that really demonstrate its size.

Somebody shot one the other morning, and by the evening it was in the soup pot. This thing was the size of suckling pig. Unlike the rat, with just a few stringy muscles, the grasscutter had plenty of meat on its bones.

And boy, was it gamey! Even more so than the rat. In the muscles this taste made it delicious, something I think I'd crave if I had grown up on it. But as I nibbled deeper, the meat on the inside of the ribs was too gamey for even this extremely open-minded palate. Still, don't travel to Africa without trying this delicacy! There's a reason it's the continent's favorite bushmeat.
